Google Rolls Out Panda Update

April 11, 2011

April 11, 2011 - Google has always used a number of signals in determining relevant search results. Some of these are on the pages themselves (such as the text on a page), some are on other sites (such as anchor text in links to a page), and some are based on user behavior (for instance, Google gathers data about how long pages take to load by using toolbar data from users who access those pages).

In recent months, Google has launched two ways for searchers to block particular sites from their search results. The first was a Chrome extension. More recently, Google has launched a block link directly in the search results that appears once a searcher has clicked from the results to a site and then return to the search results.

RepEquity Expands With Purchase

January 17, 2011

January 17, 2011

In an age when the Internet catalogues every indiscretion and users can find them with a quick Google search, District-based RepEquity has built a business by helping companies, celebrities and politicians to bury content they consider less than flattering.

The firm announced Friday that it has acquired Virilion, a Washington agency that creates Web sites, online video and mobile apps. Together they will help clients evaluate their online reputations, then design and promote content that casts them in a more positive light.

Tripp Donnelly founded the company in 2007 after 15 years of managing public relations for corporate and government clients. Over the course of his career, Donnelly said, he saw the Internet play an increasingly prominent role as a place for journalists and analysts to conduct research and for the general public to find information.

Google Instant's Effect On Search

September 9, 2010

Search as you type. It’s a simple and straightforward idea—people can get results as they type their queries. Imagining the future of search, the idea of being able to search for partial queries or provide some interactive feedback while searching has come up more than a few times. Along the way, we’ve even built quite a few demos (notably, Amit Patel in 1999 and Nikhil Bhatla in 2003).

Our search-as-you-type demos were thought-provoking—fun, fast and interactive—but fundamentally flawed. Why? Because you don’t really want search-as-you-type (no one wants search results for [bike h] in the process of searching for [bike helmets]). You really want search-before-you-type—that is, you want results for the most likely search given what you have already typed.
